Lavender Production with a Traditional Charm
Lavender held a special place in Bulgarian folklore as it was believed to ward off evil spirits and protect against bad luck. Whilst there is no evidence of lavender being evil spirits repellent, it does offer a chemical-free alternative to synthetic insecticides, safe for pets and children.
Buds are the main source of lavender essential oil, with stems contributing only minor amounts of cineole and camphor. Back in the day, lavender was harvested entirely by hand using scythes or sickles. This was a slow and time-consuming process. To ensure they could harvest all the lavender by hand on time, farmers often started around 50% unlike current practices.
At about this time the seeds start turning from green to black. They would pick one lavender flower, take the seeds out and if the dark ones equal the green ones, they would begin harvesting, and by the end of harvest 80-90% of seeds would be dark, and would start falling from the buds to the ground. They used to believe that most of oil content is in the seeds, which was incorrect.
Essential oil glands are on the flower calyces, not within the seeds. These practices were left behind and only serve context to the history of lavender.

Current Approach

The main harvest periods for Organic Lavender are July through August.
During harvest, the flowering top of the lavender is gathered, and then steam distilled. BG Oils promotes the harvesting of plants at peak 60 – 70% bloom ensuring the best yield to quality ratio for pure, natural lavender essential oil. The oil is then transported to the essential oil plant to be cleaned, filtered, tested, and packaged.
Organic Lavender is available in 1, 5, 10, and 25 kg aluminium or plastic F/HDPE containers.
