Description:

Used extensively as a flavouring of confectionary products and increasingly in personal care, aromatherapy, animal care and oral care products such as toothpastes and mouthwashes.

Khush Ingredients offers several types of mentha arvensis oil at present, conventional, organic, bespoke and most commonly the dementholised oil we call Arvensis DMO. Other by-products are menthones, terpeneless mint oil and cis-3-hexenol. This section just looks at Arvensis DMO.

We import from Uttar Pradesh region of India. The oil is produced from the steam distillation of the gathered fresh aerial parts of mentha arvensis, grown principally in fields in Uttar Pradesh. Our main partner in supply of this oil is B.D. Aromatics, who we have been working with since the day we started the business. B.D Aromatics have the focus to be the perfect partner for Khush Ingredients for mints, due to their dedication to excellence in this limited product range so we are able to supply customers the specified mentha arvensis they want, including organic. Our thinking is so aligned with our partner BD Aromatics, meaning that whilst they strive to work with farmers of mentha arvensis, we all agree that as ethical suppliers, we pay a fair price for raw material and annually declare that we are against animal testing and against other exploitative practices, such as modern slavery.

Several of our customers have visited B.D Aromatics production facilities in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India, and use their expertise, combined with Khush Ingredients logistics to cost effectively supply mints from our local (to customers) positioned warehouses in Europe.

Uttar Pradesh has become the worlds largest production area for mint oils, so in India there is a specific MCX index has been established to trade the commodity. This never tells the full story but gives global buyers a benchmark to understand supply and demand situation for this, one of the highest volume essential oils.

As a crop, mentha arvensis normally has two harvests, in April/ May and again in July each year. There is a lot of biomass associated with production of mentha arvensis essential oil and first the farmers carry out a field distillation to produce a crude mentha oil.

Khush also understands that there is tremendous pressure on the farmers for their oils and these are not wealthy large landowners. As such there is some temptation to adulterate the oils with synthetic components, particularly synthetic menthol, exists. Crude mentha has around 65 to 74% natural l-menthol present. Our customers are seeking to buy 100% natural oils, and we ensure that we and our supply partner carries out due diligence in the supply process. Such due diligence includes attending field distillations, using the same trustworthy farmers, and ability to analyse crude mentha oil for dl-menthol, a sign that synthetically produced menthol has been added. Synthetically producing racemic menthol from a non mint source, therefore falsely declaring the oil as natural and also falsely declaring this is as a pure mentha arvensis oil.

As such, Khush Ingredients mentha arvensis oils may not to be the lowest price available, but there is a good reason for that, we strive to supply our customers with 100% natural material.

We import directly from BD Aromatics, usually via Mumbai Port, a route that takes about 8 weeks from order to arrive in our warehouse. The essential oil is safe enough to air freight so we can receive and deliver the oil by air within three weeks.

Shipments are confirmed after careful batch selection and pre-shipment samples are approved by us. All our oils comply with REACH regulations for which both Khush Ltd UK and Khush BV in Netherlands are fully registered.

Packaging:

Menthone is reactive to plastic so we do not supply Arvensis in plastic containers.

This product is supplied in 1kg and 5kg aluminium containers, 25kg and 180kg food grade galvanised steel drums.

Production:

This ingredient is produced exclusively for Khush Ingredients in India. Oil is tested to British/European Pharmacopea Monograph. The months in bold are the main harvest periods.

Shelf Life:

Whilst we try and deliver dementholised arvensis oil within 12 months of production, the shelf life is now stated as three years but actually when stored well, mints can improve with age and a small amount of air. Normally with annual checks, oil can remain in specification for five years plus.
