Description:

The Mentha Spicata plant usually grows in hotter climates, reaching up to 1m in height.

Spearmint oil contains virtually no menthol in comparison to Peppermint oil, instead having a main component carvone, a terpenoid. It is a popular ingredient found in confectionary, teas and toothpaste. Even in ancient times, spearmint was once used as a teeth whitener. Medicinally, it is a herb used to instil positive emotions and help ease the mind. Further uses include aromatherapy, fragrances, bath oils, massage oils and insecticide.

Its main components are carvone, limonene and 1,8-cineole.

We import directly from Uttar Pradesh region of India.  The oil is produced from the steam distillation of the gathered fresh aerial parts of mentha spicata, grown in organic fields in Uttar Pradesh. Our main partner in supply of this oil is B.D. Aromatics, who we have been working with since the day we started the business. B.D Aromatics have the focus to be the perfect partner for Khush Ingredients for mints, due to their dedication to excellence in this limited product range. Our thinking is so aligned with our partner BD Aromatics, meaning that whilst they strive to work with farmers of mentha spicata, we all agree that as ethical suppliers, we pay a fair price for raw material and annually declare that we are against animal testing and against other exploitative practices, such as modern slavery.

We were delighted in 2017 when B.D Aromatics achieved their organic status and we started to import organic mints thereafter.

Several of our customers have visited B.D Aromatics production facilities in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India, and use their expertise, combined with Khush Ingredients logistics to cost effectively supply mints from our local (to customers) positioned warehouses in Europe.

Uttar Pradesh has become the world’s largest production area for mint oils, so in India there is a specific MCX index has been established to trade the commodity. This never tells the full story but gives global buyers a benchmark to understand supply and demand situation for this, one of the highest volume essential oils.

As a crop, mentha spicata normally has one main harvest in June each year.  There is a lot of biomass associated with production of mentha spicata essential oil and first the farmers carry out a field distillation to produce organic spearmint oil.

Khush also understands that there is tremendous pressure on the farmers for their oils and these are not wealthy large landowners.  As such there is some temptation to adulterate the oils with synthetic components, particularly synthetic carvone exists. We ensure that we and our supply partner carries out due diligence in the supply process. Such due diligence includes attending field distillations, using the same trustworthy farmers.

As such, Khush Ingredients’ organic Mentha Spicata oil may not to be the lowest price available, but there is a good reason for that, we strive to supply our customers with 100% natural, organic material.

We import directly from BD Aromatics, usually via Mumbai Port, a route that takes about 8 weeks from order to arrive in our warehouse. The essential oil is safe enough to air freight so we can receive and deliver the oil by air within three weeks. All imports ensure that B.D. Aromatics Organic Registration is up to date (EU certified by ECO-CERT) and that the eCOI procedure is complete on import.
