MINT ESSENTIAL OILS

Harvest summary

February is the month for planting Mentha arvensis (Cornmint) and Mentha piperita (peppermint).

Khush Ingredients source these mint oils from the higher regions in Uttar Pradesh (India).

In the case of arvensis, the farmer buys bags of roots, divides these and plants these in rows. This is the main mint crop, approximately 100 times the size of the Piperita crop. The Piperita is a more sensitive crop which is transplanted from plant nurseries at this time of year by the farmer, usually as a small crop in a small area of their field.  In recent years fewer farmers are growing Piperita, favouring the faster growing, higher yielding and more profitable arvensis crop.

The arvensis is fully harvested 90 days from planting, whilst the Piperita crop is harvested twice, the first cut 60-75 days after planting and the second cut 90 days after that, so normally a late spring and late summer harvest.

possible way was by motorbike…!”

Supply partner visit

Khush Ingredients regularly visit the growing region, talk with the farmers and closely monitor the crop growth to advise our customers when to purchase and likely price trends during the year for the main products: Menthol Crystals, De-Mentholised Oil (DMO) and Piperita Oil.
