NATURAL CBD ESSENTIAL OIL

(FROM HEMP)

Description:

Natural CBD is used as a supplement, reportedly treating of a wide range of ailments. The difference between Hemp and Cannabis is that Hemp is grown from cultivars which do not normally have psycho-active components. The oil is provided at the maximum cannabidiol (CBD) level permissible by EU law, which is 0.24%. Higher levels would result in occurrence of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBN (Cannabinol). Material we supply has been independently analysed to show THC / CBN content as below 0.05%, the legal limit. The 0.24% maximum is also known in the industry as 24% strength or 2400, which we find a little confusing for end users, so we will stick with 0.24%!

Chemistry:

Cannabis sativa, ext.

Natural CBD Oil is extracted by steam distillation of the aerial parts of Cannabis Sativa plant. This is very different from the fixed oil obtained from cold pressing of Hemp Seeds.

Our CBD Oil is Hemp Essential Oil with natural CBD. This is not reformulated from CDB resin, but 100% naturally occurring in Hemp Oil. The advantage of Natural CBD is that it contains the full range of cannabinoids and terpenes whereas reformulated CBD may not (usually blended with cold pressed Hemp Seed Oil). Natural CBD products are legal for sale in the UK provided they have undetectable (<0.05%) levels of CBN and THC. CBN and THC are psychoactive cannabinoids found in illegal strains of cannabis.

The Legal Status of Cannabis Extracts in Finished Cosmetics in the UK:

Hemp, being associated with varieties of cannabis that have a lower content of THC, is often grown for industrial purposes. According to the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA), the legal status of CBD and cannabis in cosmetics are outlined below:

Cannabis leaf extracts

The leaf of the Cannabis plant is a controlled drug material in the UK – a Class B drug under Part II, Schedule 2 of the 1971 Act (see the definition of “cannabis” in s.37(1) of the 1971 Act). However, purified solvent extract (obtained from herbal cannabis or cannabis resin, containing no cannabinol derivatives) may not be a controlled drug providing the extract:

  • contains no controlled cannabinoids; or
  • meets the exempt product criteria

The Cosmetics Regulation does not prohibit the use of extracts from the leaves in a finished product providing they are not accompanied by the flowering tops.

Cannabidiol (CBD)

Pure synthetic CBD and pure plant-based CBD are not controlled drugs under the 1971 Act and 2001 Regulations.

Plant derived CBD

If specific criteria are met, plant derived CBD may be used in finished cosmetic products:

  • the CBD must not be derived from the flowering or fruiting tops of the plant or the whole plant where the flowering or fruiting top remains intact for processing (including ‘hemp’ varieties);

and

  • the CBD must be in pure form and not contain any controlled substances such as specific controlled cannabinoids;

or

  • the characteristics and use of the CBD (and any impurities) are such that all three limbs of the exempt product definition in the 2001 Regulations are met.
